LEVEN VALLEY VINEYARD is situated at Gunns Plains in the temperate, maritime climate of North West Tasmania. Located on the side of a north-facing hill, the the vineyard is approximately 1 Ha (2.5ac) and is planted half to Pinot Noir and half to Chardonnay grapes. Soil type is predominantly rich basalt over limestone and is drip irrigated from a dam.

Using overhead netting allowed us to perform pre-picking tasks and to harvest without its removal and replacement.

The 2008 harvests took place on Friday 25th April (Pinot Noir) and Saturday 3rd May (Chardonnay). Baumes of each variety was  12 for the Pinot and 12.2 for the Chardonnay. We were tempted to defer both pickings for another week or so, however, increasing levels of bird damage together with a deterioration of weather conditions made it too much of a gamble. Titratable acids, PH and flavours were all where we wanted them and we are very pleased with the result.

This year sees us changing winemaker due to the "retirement" of Richard Richardson and we are looking forward to working with Guy Wagner of the Riverview Wine Centre, Legana. Guy will be  ageing some of our Pinot Noir in French oak this year for a limited quantity premium red. He will also produce our usual unwooded Pinot and Chardonnay as well as a Rose table wine.
